In early summer 2008, the Baader team installed and commissioned two fully automatic 5.3-meter domes for the Austrian Academy of Sciences at the Institute for Space Research at the Lustbühel Observatory.
The Institute for Space Research – Department of Satellite Geodesy – has operated a Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) station at the Lustbühel Observatory since 1982.
Today, we measure – day and night, 7 days a week – the distance to satellites equipped with retro-reflectors orbiting the Earth at altitudes of up to 20,000 kilometers, with a single-shot accuracy of ± 2–3 mm. This makes the Graz station one of the best laser observation stations in the world. To date, measurements have been carried out for more than 50 such satellites.
