My Baader Observatory – A Long-Held Dream Becomes Reality
From the initial idea to having my own observatory in the garden – a personal account of making a special dream come true.
For many years, I had dreamed of having an observatory of my own. The idea of being able to explore the night sky at any time from my own permanently equipped observing site had always fascinated me. Having my own observatory in the garden was therefore far more than just an idea to me – it was a long-held dream that I was determined to make a reality one day.
When we fulfilled our wish of having our own home in 2021, the idea of building my own observatory once again came into greater focus. Even while planning and designing our property, I already had in mind that my own observatory might one day be built here. It was to become a place where I could pursue my passion for astronomy without the time-consuming process of repeatedly setting up and dismantling equipment, and where I could enjoy the fascination of the universe in complete tranquillity.
In 2024, the time had finally come: my dream of having my own observatory became a reality.
By a fortunate coincidence, I had the opportunity to purchase a pre-owned Baader observatory dome in excellent condition. It quickly became clear to me that this was the opportunity I had been waiting for for so long. Since the dome was located around 500 kilometres from our home, a considerable amount of organisation and hands-on work was initially required. I dismantled the entire dome myself and then transported it home on a trailer over the approximately 500-kilometre journey. This first step alone was a special experience, because with every component I dismantled and loaded, the realisation of my dream moved one step closer.
We also took complete responsibility for planning and constructing the substructure ourselves. It was particularly important to me to create a solid and durable foundation for the dome and to integrate the observatory harmoniously into our garden. From the initial planning and construction work through to the installation of the dome, the entire project involved a great deal of personal commitment, practical craftsmanship and eager anticipation.
When the Baader dome finally stood at its new location, it was an indescribable feeling. An idea that had accompanied me for many years had finally become reality: my own observatory in the garden.
Today, the observatory is a very special place for me. It allows me to pursue my passion for astronomy whenever I wish, take advantage of spontaneous observing opportunities and enjoy the tranquillity beneath the starry sky. I particularly appreciate the convenience of a permanently equipped observatory, where my astronomical equipment has its dedicated place and is always ready for the next night of observing. The Baader dome is far more than simply a protective enclosure for my equipment. It is the centrepiece of my observatory and represents the fulfilment of a long-held personal dream.
Looking back, the entire journey – from dismantling and transporting the dome to planning and constructing the substructure myself – was worth every effort. My observatory has since become an integral part of my life. It combines my enthusiasm for astronomy with the satisfaction of having created something of my own.
Today, I can say with complete conviction: I would not want to be without my Baader observatory. For me, it is a place of tranquillity, fascination and countless discoveries that the night sky still has in store. And every time I open the dome and look up at the starry sky, I am reminded once again that making this dream a reality was worth it.
