Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) station of the GFZ in Potsdam. By means of ultrashort laser pulses reflected by satellites, the orbit of special Earth satellites is measured with centimeter accuracy by determining the pulse travel times. Such measurements are used for the precise determination of the Earth’s large-scale tectonics, its gravitational field, as well as for quality control of navigation methods such as GPS. Further information on this can be found on the Website of the GFZ Potsdam
