Zugspitze: Umwelt Forschungsstation Schneefernerhaus

The Schneefernerhaus has been Germany’s highest environmental research station since 1999, located at 2650 m above sea level (below the summit of the Zugspitze). Scientists from many different institutions carry out continuous measurements here or work on research projects.

One of these projects is the measurement of the distribution of the climate gas water vapor in the atmosphere. For this research, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) acquired two domes from Baader Planetarium (2.6M and 4.2M) in order to protect the highly sensitive measuring instruments from the harsh environmental conditions on the Zugspitze.
