Sternwarte Zollern-Alb

Zollern-Alb Observatory with 2x 4.2 meter domes and one 6.15 meter dome is one of the largest public observatories in Germany. Guided tours are offered regularly throughout the year, and additional tours can be arranged for groups or school classes.

Here is a customer quote from Mr. Rolf Bitzer about our domes:

We would also like to compliment you on your domes. Despite intense solar radiation in summer, it was always pleasantly cool in all 3 domes – a clear sign of the excellent (!!) insulation.

After 10 years of operation, we received a detailed customer review of our observatories in 2016. Here you can find the detailed official test report.

Update mid-February 2021 from Mr. Rolf Bitzer (1st Chairman of the Zollern-Alb Observatory):

By the way, your domes are coping with the current weather conditions without any problems. At times we had night temperatures of over minus 25 degrees, followed by thawing weather which was then followed by black ice. On the observatory grounds and the adjacent properties, a larger lake immediately formed on which ice skating would easily have been possible.

During my weekly observatory inspection due to Corona (water and heating), I also regularly check the domes, and they are all functioning perfectly!!

If there is serious interest in a Baader dome, Mr. Bitzer is also happy to demonstrate the domes of the Zollern-Alb Observatory by prior appointment. Please contact him directly at
